What stays on your device by default
Event Risk Trainer answers, confidence scores, progress, review dates, imported live-evidence bundles, and exports are stored in your browser. Market Timing Challenge also stores your current hidden period, allocation choices, days revealed, and completed period count there. Strategy articles may store the retirement goal you enter: starting portfolio, monthly withdrawal, and time horizon. The FIRE planner stores the current portfolio, monthly contributions, desired retirement spending, years until retirement, years the money must last, growth assumption, and any portfolio choice you save. While you are signed out, those figures and choices are not sent to FIRE Decision Lab or stored there unless you use your FIRE guide. If you use the guide, the visible page values described below are sent for that answer or personalized message. You can delete the local copy by clearing this site's browser storage; the trainer also provides its own export and deletion controls.
Optional online progress and email login
Entering your email and choosing Save progress inside a tool immediately creates or updates that tool's online copy. The same browser gets a secure cookie that may update that email's copy again but cannot read it. On an unfamiliar device, you ask us to email a six-digit code before restoring or replacing an existing copy. You choose each tool separately. The Event Risk Trainer copy contains historical lesson answers, completed lessons, and checkpoint progress. The Market Timing Challenge copy contains your allocation choices, days revealed, current hidden period, and completed period count. Imported live evidence, private live briefs, exports, and investment holdings are never included. A retirement goal is stored online only when you are signed in and choose Save as my default. It contains the starting portfolio, monthly withdrawal, and time horizon you entered, but no holdings, account number, or broker connection.
On the complete Strategies page, the whole comparison workspace is saved to your profile automatically while you are signed in. That copy includes the calculator inputs, filters, sort, pinned strategies, rankings, statuses, and notes. It does not include holdings, account numbers, or a broker connection. While you are signed out, the same workspace stays only in that browser.
The login cookie lasts for up to 90 days. The save-only browser cookie, account record, and online progress copy expire two years after their latest relevant use. You can delete the online copy and login record from the progress page without deleting progress stored on your device.
Your FIRE guide
The FIRE guide can use the text visibly shown on your current page, visible choices and calculator values, the page where you first arrived, the referring website and path, campaign labels, and the FIRE Decision Lab pages and actions recorded in this browser. It does not receive hidden page scripts, password or email fields, free-text form fields, your activity on other websites, or your browser's general history. In the trainer, later checkpoints, later prices, outcomes, and teaching notes remain hidden from it.
While you are signed out, the on-site copy of your discussions, remembered details, and first-party browsing history stays on this device. Each successful chat exchange is also copied to a private server record. The site owner receives an email when a chat starts and a full transcript after five minutes without activity so he can review how people use the guide. Those private records and delivery records expire after two years. If you choose email login, your on-site assistant history is copied to your profile and follows you across devices. The guide can then also use your saved retirement goal, strategy workspace, and summarized learning progress. The public evidence it searches excludes raw licensed observations, vendor-identifying rows, private research, and unseen lesson outcomes. Signed-in assistant records expire two years after their latest use. The assistant stops before its model usage would exceed $10 in a UTC day; reaching that limit sends one administrative alert to the site owner.
A page interaction may lead the guide to privately assess whether there is something it is at least 70% confident you would both appreciate and benefit from receiving then. It normally stays silent, waits at least a day after sending a message, and waits longer after dismissals. You can mark a message helpful or dismiss it; that response changes how often the guide speaks. It can ask whether you want a specific kind of email, but it changes an email choice only after your explicit reply. Past chats lets you reopen earlier discussions. Ask the guide what it remembers, or tell it in the chat to forget a detail, clear its FIRE Decision Lab browsing history, forget its profile, or delete all on-site assistant data. Notification emails already delivered to the site owner are not removed by those chat commands; you can ask support to delete records still held by the site.
Previous email choices and research requests
FIRE Decision Lab was archived on 21 September 2026. New email signups, course reminders and research requests are closed. Saving progress does not subscribe you to anything.
Previously submitted records may include an email address, the purpose and date of consent, the originating page and an optional research question. No new marketing email will be sent. You can remove previous email choices on the progress page or request deletion through the support address above. Archiving the project does not delete stored information automatically.
Private traffic counts
We keep our own record of successful public page requests so we can tell which pages and research links people use. We also record when someone starts a public practice tool, saves progress, chooses an email list, submits a research question, or saves a retirement goal. For the FIRE planner, we count only anonymous starts, completions, choice saves, whether the feedback prompt opened or was postponed, and the three structured debrief answers if you send them. We never put the email address, question, retirement figures, progress, or investment choices in these traffic records.
A random identifier joins pages and actions during one browser tab's visit and starts again after 30 minutes without activity. It is kept in that tab. A separate random browser identifier is stored by this site for up to 370 days so we can count unique browsers, see whether they return on a later day, and compare groups by the month of their first visit. It is not a name or proof of one unique person. Clearing this site's browser storage creates a new identifier, and using a different browser or device counts separately. Each traffic record may also contain the time, public path, referring website, and campaign, channel, or message label. Records expire after 370 days.
Traffic records contain no IP address, user-agent string, account, device fingerprint, full referring URL, email address, retirement figures, or investment choices. Known crawlers, non-browser clients, headless browsers, and automated browser sessions are excluded when they can be recognized, although no automated-traffic filter is perfect. The site owner can set a first-party exclusion cookie so our own browsing is not counted. We use no advertising cookies or third-party analytics service, and we do not record visits or choices inside the Event Risk Trainer lessons.
Hosting and security
Cloudflare may process ordinary request details such as an IP address, time, path, and browser information to deliver and protect the site and store an online copy you request. To answer in the FIRE guide, Fireworks receives your message, selected public site evidence, visible page text and controls, and the FIRE Decision Lab history or profile details described above. We do not send form fields such as email addresses or passwords as page context. Fireworks states that it does not log or store prompts or generations for open models unless the customer explicitly opts in; we have not opted in. Resend processes your email address and requested login message to deliver the six-digit code. After loading, the trainer makes a network request only when you choose Save progress or request a login code. Market Timing Challenge loads its public market-history package when you start, but it does not transmit your choices unless you choose Save progress. A strategy article keeps retirement-goal changes in your browser unless you are signed in and choose Save as my default. The FIRE planner loads one public package of aggregate history-test counts. Its financial inputs and saved portfolio choice stay in your browser while you are signed out; the complete Strategies workspace syncs to your profile automatically while you are signed in.
Your choices and rights
You can delete learner data locally at any time, delete an online copy—including a saved retirement goal and Strategies workspace—from the progress page, and withdraw each email consent there by unticking it. You can also ask us to delete stored information by contacting support. Where applicable, you may request access, correction, restriction, or portability, object to processing, or complain to your data-protection authority by contacting the responsible organisation.
